Dr. Leslie Lindenauer of Western Connecticut State University, is presenting a talk at the library on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 6:30 pm titled

"My Step-mother the Witch: Changing Notions of Female Evil in Popular Culture."

By the eighteenth century, the witch was no longer the epitome of evil in America. To enlightened Americans in the process of creating a new nation, the poor women tried and executed for witchcraft the century before were victims of Puritan intolerance and superstition. Still, a symbol of female evil might prove useful to reinforce notions of female goodness. Enter the evil stepmother...
