National Library Week Events

National Library Week is April 13th-18th, 2009

Join our week-long celebration of the American Library, an institution that shapes individuals, families, and communities. We appreciate our patrons and we’re showing it with these upcoming events:

Free Coffee in the Lobby All Week!

Food for Fines All Week!
Bring in canned goods with your overdue items and we’ll clear your fines for those items.


Edible Book Contest

in the Library Community Room:
Put your favorite book in your belly!

Bring your creation to the library between 11:30 am and 12 p.m.
Public viewing is until 1 p.m., and then the feasting begins!

New Playaway Titles Available at The Henry Carter Hull Library




What is a Playaway? It's a digital audiobook fully contained in a unit that is smaller than a box of playing cards. All you need is a pair of headphones!

Scotch Whisky Seminar at the Henry Carter Hull Library April 8, 2009

A Scotch whisky seminar will be held at the Henry Carter Hull Library on
Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at 6:30 pm.
Simon Brooking, North America’s ambassador for Ardmore and Laphroaig Distilleries will give a talk on the history of Scotch whisky, how it is made, and how to appreciate it. This free event is open to those 21 and older and registration is required by calling (860) 669-2342.

New England hiking lecture at the Henry Carter Hull Library April 2, 2009

Sally Roberts of Hartford will be presenting a lecture on New England hiking on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 6:30 pm at the Henry Carter Hull Library. Her presentation will cover her experiences on trails and waterways throughout New England and what kind of gear you need for a proper trek.
Roberts is an avid hiker, kayaker, snowshoer, cross-country skier and a member of the Sierra Club, Appalachian Mountain Club, New Haven Hiking Club, Green Mountain Club, and the Housatonic Valley Paddle Club.
This event is free and no registration is required.

Come meet 18 year-old author Rachel Kauder Nalebuff, who has collected true stories about getting a first period from girls & women around the world. Meg Cabot, Gloria Steinem and Tamora Pierce are a few of the famous folks who have written about their experiences. The collective voices of all of the contributors encourage readers to embrace their own story. My Little Red Book is funny, profound and affirming.

Rachel Kauder Nalebuff is a recent graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall, and will soon attend Yale University. All of the royalties of her book are being donated to women's health charities. My Little Red Book will be for sale after the presentation.

The O’Rourke’s of Middletown are performing a free concert in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Henry Carter Hull Library. They will play a mix of traditional Irish jigs and reels and their upbeat and playful feel is sure to entertain all ages.

Most Saturday evenings you will find The O'Rourke’s playing traditional Irish music during the dinner hours at O'Rourke’s Diner in Middletown. The O’Rourke’s ensemble includes: Linda Mann (concertina), Jody Cormack (mandola), Eleanor Nettleton (fiddle), Tom Humphreys (bazouki) and Tom Cushing (whistle).

This event is free and registration is not required.
